FAQs about UK ETA
Is UK ETA a visa?
No. An ETA or Electronic Travel Authorisation is a digital travel permission, as the name suggests. It doesn’t work as a visa.
Does a UK ETA guarantee entry?
No. An ETA only gives you permission to travel to the UK. It doesn’t guarantee your entry to the UK. That is controlled by border officials once you’re in the UK.
Does every traveler need a UK ETA?
Yes. One traveler = one ETA. This includes ETAs for babies and children.
Do I need to offer confirmed travel dates for a UK ETA?
No. The form can be completed without any confirmed travel/return dates. The ETA application process doesn’t require this information.
Do I need to provide any flight or hotel booking references to apply for a UK ETA?
No, your flight, hotel, or accommodation details are not required for the UK ETA application process.
Does the UK ETA application form ask for the purpose of travel?
No. The UK ETA application form doesn’t need a purpose of visit for your travel. The border officials will definitely ask for it—and it helps to double-check our instructions and clarifications on this page to make sure you fit the description for ETA use. But the application itself doesn’t require this piece of information from the applicant.
How long does a UK ETA last?
A single UK ETA can last for up to 2 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes sooner. If your ETA is for 2 years but your passport is going to expire in 1 year, the ETA is also going to expire, technically, alongside the passport in 1 year then. You will need to renew your passport and apply for a new ETA because the ETA is linked to a specific passport, not a person.
Can I use an ETA for multiple trips?
That’s allowed, yes. Given the ETA is valid and being used by a traveler with the same passport that it’s linked to, it can be used for more than one trip to the UK.
What happens if my passport changes after receiving ETA approval?
Then you must renew your passport and apply for a new ETA. The old ETA (the one linked to your older passport) will not work anymore. One passport = one ETA. They’re linked. In a way, your ETA expired with your older passport.
Can I work in the UK with an ETA?
Usually no. But there are a few limited exceptions only at a high level.
Can I apply for a UK ETA on behalf of someone else?
Yes, but each traveler needs their own application, including children and babies.
What questions are asked during the UK ETA application process?
Personal, passport, contact, photo, and suitability/security questions.
Can a student apply for a UK ETA for study purposes?
Yes, short-term programs are fair game. A lot of UK programs (maximum 11 months, for example), can be completed while on an ETA and not a student (short-term) visa.
